Shopping for Plus-Size Wedding Dresses

Being engaged is one of the happiest times of your life, but it can also be one of the most stressful times. For brides of all sizes, shopping for the perfect dress is often complicated and a bit intimidating. It's even harder for a full-figured bride searching for a plus-size wedding dress. You have to deal with samples that are too small, sales people that are sometimes unfriendly and the worry of not finding a shape that flatters your body type. Before you set foot in the first store, it's helpful to arm yourself with as much information as possible. Here are some tips that every plus-size bride should know before embarking on her journey for her dream gown.

Sizing:
The sample dresses in most bridal salons are a size 10. Or so you think. Bridal clothing runs small, so a size 10 is actually equivalent to a size 6 in sportswear.

This means that many women will attempt to try on a sample that simply doesn't fit. Don't let this frustrating fact discourage you though. Many designers make their dresses up to a size 22 or 24, so finding a fashionable plus-size wedding dress is far from impossible. You should note that, for larger sizes, many stores tack on additional charges to cover the extra fabric and the special measurements it takes to ensure your dress fits correctly. But it's worth it because you are guaranteed to get a dress that fits you properly and, more importantly, makes you feel beautiful. After all, it is your wedding day.

About Beach Wedding Dresses

Beach weddings are considered more informal than their church counterparts. Full formal skirts and poufy headpieces aren’t required. Instead, a sleek, casual style is called for. That isn’t to say your day will be any less special or glamorous than that of a church wedding, it only means you’ll want to go with a different type of dress or gown.

An informal wedding dress looks classy and elegant for your beach wedding, without being too over the top. It has many different styles, a halter or strapless top or sleeves for those who prefer to cover up a little more. All are slim but flowing with various lengths.

A Wedding to Remember: Shopping for the 'Perfect' Dress

It's secondary only to finding the man of her dreams. Industry insiders call it the "Oh, mommy" moment: when a bride-to-be finds and falls in love with "The One" — her dream wedding gown.

Sometimes, however, a bride's dream gown is at odds with the gown her loved ones envision for her. Herein lay the crux of another "Primetime" hidden camera experiment.

The objective: to find out whether honesty is the best policy when a bride-to-be has found "The One," even when it's completely wrong for her. Should friends and family be supportive and hold their tongues, or should they tell the truth if they think the gown is terrible?

Watch the story on "Primetime" tonight at 10 p.m. ET.

For this experiment, ABC News asked real brides-to-be to invite their family, bridesmaids and friends to the upscale Manhattan bridal emporium Kleinfeld to bear witness to a fitting of their supposed dream gown.

ABC then paired each bride with outrageous bridal garments, some of which were actually for sale, that were sure to elicit strong reactions from their loved ones.

ABC also invited Carley Roney, editor-in-chief of the wedding Web site TheKnot.com, to watch the experiment from our control room and provide insight into some of the scenarios as they played out.

When the brides stepped out of the dressing room and stood in front of their guests, hidden cameras were there to catch every jaw-drop and every eye-pop.

Dutiful Friends and Bridesmaids

Andrea Sinkin, a 28-year old trend consultant, wanted to put her friends and bridesmaids to the test. On the day of her fitting, Andrea stepped out of the dressing room donning a gown that looked like every Goth girl's vision for prom circa 1984: a scarlet red heap of lace, chiffon and tulle.

Eco-friendly wedding dresses

Depending on your romanticism and your love of weddings you may see the wedding dress as an iconic item, a memento, an heirloom, a symbol of beauty, purity, femininity or a puffy thing that wastes a lot of fabric for just a few hours.

Or, perhaps you have an ecologically mixed view of the dress. So how do you have a gorgeous, symbolic dress within your budget and stay eco-friendly? I can only offer a few suggestions.

Threadhead Creations
offers off-the-rack and custom designed dresses. The designer uses hemp, cotton, peace silk, raw silk and bamboo to make her dresses. You pick the fabric, the style, the color and the train.
Within a few months you have an ecologically friendly dress made by hand. Prices range from $450 to $2,000. The dresses tend to be classic and simple. Don't expect bustles. Think hippie.

Wholly Jo's is a UK-based dressmaker that uses exclusively fair trade and organic fabrics. You can also recycle material from another wedding dress for a new creation. With this shop you can be sure one woman is making a unique dress designed for you, but you've also got to allow at least six months time and be prepared to pay. £350 to start on wedding dress designs, fittings etc. Fabric not included.

Conscious Clothing based in Santa Fe, New Mexico is another clothier with the environment in mind. Their fabrics are all hemp blends, including hemp/silk, hemp/floral jacquard and hemp/silk/satin. They also have pure Vegan fabric. The dresses are fantastic, but the prices are to be expected: $700 - $2,000 as a starting point.

Bridal Dress Styles (Wedding Dress)

A bride can get a bridal dress in almost any style imaginable. Depending upon how formal the wedding is, the bride may choose a floor length bridal dress or a dress that is cut to the knee. Also, a bridal dress will be selected depending upon the body type of the bride: the goal is to choose a dress that will compliment the natural contours of a bride’s body.

A bridal dress that is an a-line is a dress that compliments the upper torso and does not bring too much attention to the area of the waist. The dress flares at the bottom into a gentle bell shape. This dress is ideal for the bride that is self conscious about her waist line as it draws attention away from the waist and toward the upper torso area. For the bride looking to have a fairy tale wedding, the ball gown wedding gown is the ideal choice. Like the a-line bridal dress, the gown does not draw too much attention to the waist. Rather, the dress compliments the upper torso area and streamlines the area below the waist.

For women that are extremely worried about the waistline, an empire gown proves ideal. The bridal dress does not accentuate the waist at all, and the bust line is more defined because the bottom of the gown meets the top of the gown above the mid-section. Alternatively, for a bride that is looking for a sleek and sensual bridal dress, the sheath bridal gown is perfect. Such a gown clings to the body and compliments the natural curves of the bride wearing it.

Tips For Selecting Wedding Dresses

Your wedding dress makes a statement, as does your entire wedding reflecting your personality. Are you chic? Sophisticated? Classic? Sexy? Traditional? Avant garde?
Enlisting the aid of a professional can eliminate hours of hassles and headaches and help you achieve the ideal dress. They are trained to find what works. A good consultant can take one look at you and lead you to the right style, the right designer.

Certain manufacturers cut larger or smaller so some work for petites, others for full figures. You might want to bring clippings from a bridal magazine or that you have printed from the Internet to give the consultant a clearer idea of the styles you prefer.

Many gown manufactures now offer champagne, ivory and blush in addition to traditional white. These softer hues may be more flattering to your complexion. You should try on no fewer than three gowns so feel free to try on as many as you want until you find the perfect gown. A dress that might look rather plain on the hanger might transform your figure. Even when you think you have found the right dress, try on a couple more just to be sure.

Choosing the right gown starts with proportion. A dress may look gorgeous on the model in the photo, but it will never look good on you if the lines are wrong for your proportions. Think of your silhouette and begin with your best features, then ease into the ones that are less than perfect. Do you have a tiny waist that would look fantastic in a clingy sheath gown? Do you have great cleavage ideal for being set off by an open neckline? Wonderful shoulders or a lovely swan neck perfect for a strapless or off the shoulder gown.

Don't worry many styles also can camouflage your less than perfect features. Large hips can be hidden with an A-line gown. It will give height and reduce width making you look taller and slimmer. Another option would be a hollow waist which begins an inch and a half below your natural waist, camouflaging your heaviest part.

A thick waist can be minimized by a princess waist, just make sure the fullness of the dress starts below your thick part. Heavy thighs are easy to conceal beneath a full skirt, but stay away from any style that is straight or narrow. The same advice applies if you have a full derriere. Remember to draw attention away from your flaws and concentrate on a beautiful neckline instead.

Historical reproduction and original vintage wedding gowns
Original vintage gowns may require expensive and expert repairs for them to be wearable. Old fabric, if not properly stored, can become damaged causing it to tear easily or disintegrate. Alterations can usually be made to make the dress smaller, but making the dress larger is very difficult as it is impossible to match the fabric with the original and care must be taken to hide the gussets and new stitching. Look for a reputable vintage shop and find a seamstress with experience fitting and restoring vintage couture.

Reproductions are another way to have a gown from times gone by whether it is 1892 or 1492. These are new gowns made to replicate the fashions of centuries past. These are often created from vintage sewing patterns either by cutting apart an old gown to copy the design or creating an entirely new gown from a vintage photograph or painting.

Wedding Dresses and Gown Trends

Strapless Wedding Dresses

Strapless wedding dresses continue to dominate the bridal gown market. Sophisticated and elegant, they emit a hint of sexiness and sensuality. Strapless dresses are flattering to most figures, allow freedom of movement and work well with nearly all styles of weddings. Add a little antique lace for a vintage wedding or team it with some contemporary jewellery for a modern touch.

For a timeless outfit, visit the website of bridal couture designer Mariana Hardwick. With emphasis on silhouette, construction and texture; with every fold, every hem, every sparkling bead lovingly hand-stitched, you'll know that a wedding dress from Hardwick's is a spectacular, original creation.

The Mermaid Wedding Dress

It's back! Figure hugging at the bodice, hips and thighs, the Mermaid wedding dress then flairs outs giving brides a mermaid-like silhouette. It's not a wedding dress style for the faint-hearted but if you can pull it off, you'll look curvy and luscious on your wedding day.

Wedding Dresses with Touches of Glamour

It's all about simple wedding dresses with attention focused on the little details. Brides are glamming up their dresses with metallic thread embroidery, trails of tiny buttons and rhinestone buckles. Tea-length Wedding Dresses

For a sophisticated and contemporary look, go for tea-length wedding dresses. Falling between the bottom of the knee and the bottom of the calf, it's the preferred length of bridal designers this season. Ideal for semi-formal or casual weddings, they suit most figures and inspire romance and fun.

A Return to Wedding Dress Elegance

Elegant sheaths that drape the body are at the minute very en vogue to complement wedding dresses. This season's fashions cling to the figure in seductive silks and satins and leave no question of the bride's style and sophistication.
